Dr. Liu is a licensed medical practitioner in China and a federally registered Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner in Switzerland. He is a 21st-generation inheritor of the Shen School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology and a member of Acupuncture Needle Quality Control and Safety group under the ISO Technical Committee for Traditional Chinese Medicine (ISO/TC 249/WG 3). Dr. Liu received his bachelor’s degree from Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine, his master’s from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and his doctoral from the Swiss University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

He currently serves as Deputy Medical Director of the TCM MingDao Group in Switzerland; Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Continuing Education at the Swiss University of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Director of the Zurich Office of the China–Switzerland Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre; Secretary-General of the Swiss Federation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Associations; Secretary-General of the European Society of Classical Formula Chinese Medicine; Secretary-General of the International Association of Cosmetic Acupuncture; and Executive Council Member of the Specialized Committee for Acupoint Thread-Embedding Research under the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.

His principal research interests include the preservation and teaching of the clinical experience from distinguished senior TCM practitioners, as well as the standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal standards. He has participated in projects under China’s National Basic Research Program, also known as "Project 973"; the first national initiative of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine to establish inheritance studios for academic schools of TCM; the “Inheritance of Eminent Physicians and Scholars” project of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences; and more than ten specialized national projects concerning the standardization of TCM. Dr. Liu has served as chief editor of one book and associate editor-in-chief of four others. She has published more than 30 papers in leading Chinese academic journals and 11 articles indexed in the Science Citation Index. In 2015, he received the Third Prize for the Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine.
